EpiPen" and EpiPen Jr" are pre-loaded syringes that inject a single dose of adrenaline for the emergency treatment of adults and children who experience severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, or 'allergic shock').
Following negotiations between ASCIA (the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology & Allergy), CSL (Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) and the PBAC (Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee), EpiPen" and EpiPen Jr" have recently been approved for listing on the PBS Authority system as of 1 November 2003.
Although listing may lead to an increase in the prescribing of EpiPen", and therefore increased costs to the community, it is likely that this treatment will be more readily available and affordable for patients of all ages who are at significant risk of developing anaphylaxis.
ASCIA has established an Anaphylaxis Working Party to develop 'best practice guidelines' for risk-assessment, EpiPen" prescribing, and anaphylaxis management. ASCIA has also been working with the Commonwealth Department of Health to put in place measures to prevent inappropriate prescribing, to monitor usage, and to ensure that EpiPen" is provided in the context of a comprehensive patient education program.
